Asha’s Initiative in Combating Chronic Diseases: Empowering Slum Communities with Awareness and Early Detection
As part of Asha's ongoing commitment to improving health outcomes in Delhi’s slum communities, Asha recently conducted a series of impactful awareness and screening camps under its Non-Communicable Chronic Disease Management Program. These camps, held across our community centers, focused on educating residents about the growing risks of diabetes and hypertension—two silent yet prevalent health threats in these areas.
Through a combination of early detection screenings and personalized counselling, the camps provided critical health insights and actionable strategies to hundreds of beneficiaries. Participants learned about effective prevention measures, including the adoption of healthier lifestyle choices, balanced diets, and regular exercise. The camps also emphasized the importance of proper medication adherence, routine monitoring, and stress management techniques, empowering individuals to take control of their health and mitigate the risks associated with chronic diseases.

From Silence to Smiles: The Transformation of Sahib
Eleven-year-old Sahib grew up surrounded by the harsh realities of life. His home was not a place of peace, but one of turmoil. His father’s drinking led to violent outbursts, leaving Sahib and his older sister trapped in a cycle of fear and pain. Eventually, his parents separated, and he came to live with his grandparents in the Seelampur slum community. Yet, the emotional scars from those early years remained.
When Sahib first came to the Asha Centre five years ago, he barely spoke. The trauma had left him withdrawn, his eyes downcast, as though the weight of his young life was too much to bear. It seemed as if the world had stolen his voice. His sister, though equally affected, clung to the hope that Asha could bring them a sense of normalcy. And over time, it did.
For Sahib, Asha became more than just a place to go after school; it became a refuge. At the centre, he found a second family, one that offered understanding, kindness, and the stability he had been missing. Here, he could be a child again, without fear. He started opening up, slowly at first—joining in activities, playing chess, reading books, and finding comfort in the warmth of the volunteers and staff.
Now in sixth grade, Sahib has transformed into a confident, curious young boy. He walks into the Asha Centre each day with a smile on his face, eager to do his homework, learn new things, and play with friends. He loves meeting new volunteers from all over the world, hearing their stories, and sharing his own. The computer, once an unfamiliar machine, has become his gateway to exploring a world beyond his slum—a world filled with possibilities.
Looking back, it’s hard to imagine that this was the same boy who once could barely make eye contact. Sahib’s story is one of quiet courage and resilience. It’s a story of a young boy reclaiming his voice, his joy, and his future—one day at a time.
Sahib’s journey, like that of so many children at Asha, shows the incredible power of a safe space and caring community. Your support allows us to continue transforming lives, helping children like Sahib discover their potential and build brighter futures, even in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Empowering Young Minds: The Importance of Adolescent Health Education
Understanding adolescent health is very important for young people, especially those from underprivileged communities. It helps them make informed choices about their physical and mental well-being during this crucial period of growth.
Smriti, our Communications Team member, has taken the initiative to conduct sessions on Reproductive Health. Going above and beyond her usual responsibilities, she is taking important lessons for the adolescent girls in our new Youth Group. These lessons cover topics like adolescent and menstrual health—areas where many girls lack knowledge, yet are vital for their growth and overall well-being, helping them build a brighter future.

A Dream Realized: From Seelampur to Sydney University
Here’s a remarkable story of a young girl from the slums who has seen nothing but great poverty all her life, written in her own words:
My name is Fazia, and I am 23 years old. I live in a slum in Seelampur with my mother and my siblings. We all stay in a single rented room.
It’s very small for a family like ours, and we have to use a public toilet. The drains around our house are always dirty and blocked with garbage. Life here is hard.
In 2017, when I was 15, my world turned upside down. My father passed away after a brief illness. He was our only source of income, and after he died, it felt like everything fell apart.
Our extended family suggested that I should stop going to school and get married, since there was no one to pay for my education. It was such a painful thing to hear. I had dreams, and they were asking me to give them all up.
My older brother made many sacrifices for the sake of our family. He decided to quit school so he could support us. He works long hours as a porter, transporting goods in his horse carriage from morning until night. I know how hard he works to take care of us, and I am forever grateful to him.
While I was preparing for my high school exams, we found out that my mother had a brain tumor. There were days when we had no food because every bit of money went towards her treatment. I was taking care of her in the hospital while trying to study at the same time, and
I felt so helpless. I even thought about leaving school to help the family more.
But then, Asha stepped into my life. They gave me the support and motivation I needed. The Asha team encouraged me to continue my education, and with their help, I scored 96% in my
high school exams. I still can’t believe it sometimes—I was the highest-scoring Asha student in 2020! I’ll never forget the day my results came out and I met Dr Kiran Ma’am. She was thrilled. She hugged me and promised to be there for me always. That was a special moment for me.
Even though I did well, my struggles weren’t over. My mother wanted me to start earning right away. Asha’s team spoke to her and convinced her that continuing my studies would be the best for our future. With their support, I was able to get admission into Delhi University’s Bachelor of English Honours program, which had always been my dream. Imagine my feelings when I was admitted!
Asha covered all my university expenses, and that was such a relief for my family. How can I ever thank Dr Kiran and Asha for providing me with these financial resources?
When I first walked into the university campus, coming from the narrow, crowded streets of Seelampur, it felt like I had stepped into a completely different world. The campus was so beautiful, and I couldn’t believe that I was actually there. I had never interacted with boys before, and the idea of talking to them made me nervous. But in college, I quickly learned
how to communicate confidently with everyone. It was such a big change for me, but it also made me feel more independent and stronger.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, my brother lost his job. Asha supported us with groceries and medicines, and they trained me to become a Corona Warrior. I served my community
during the pandemic, helping others just like Asha had helped me.
Asha also gave me an amazing opportunity to intern at Macquarie Investment Bank. It was my first time working in a professional environment, and I learned so much. Dr. Kiran Ma’am
also introduced me to Dr. Jean Peteet, a Professor at Boston University, who teaches me English online from the USA. Her lessons have been so helpful, and I’m so grateful for her support. I also prepared for my IELTS exam with Meta, an IELTS trainer from Spain, and I was so happy to score an overall 7.5 band!
Now, I’m preparing for the biggest step of my life. Through Dr Kiran and Asha’s collaboration with Sydney University, in December 2024, I’ll be going to Australia to pursue my Master of Strategic and Public Relations there. I will be going on a full Asha/Sydney Uni Equity scholarship, wherein 100% of my expenses will be paid.
From the tiny streets of Seelampur to an international university in Australia—it still feels unreal sometimes. But I know I have come this far because of the support of Dr Kiran Ma’am, Asha family, my own family and everyone who believed in me. I’m excited and ready for the next chapter of my life. I ask for your support, your prayers and your blessings as I embark on my journey in Australia.

Shadows to Success: Saurabh’s Journey from Anna Nagar to Delhi University
In the shadow of towering office buildings like the WHO headquarters and the police offices, lies the Anna Nagar slum community—a world starkly different from the hustle of the city around it. Here, life is a daily struggle. Tiny and cramped shanties with the limited space and line narrow, litter-strewn lanes. In one of these shanties, measuring no more than 12×12 feet, lives Saurabh and his family of six.
Their small, cramped home offers little respite from the harsh conditions outside. The open drain nearby is a constant threat, especially during the monsoon season. When the rains come, dirty water and sewage seep into their home, soaking their bedding, ruining their clothes, and leaving the family to spend sleepless nights in the damp and cold. It’s not uncommon for Saurabh’s father, a laborer earning just 1000 rupees a month at a gas station, to sit up late, trying to shield his family from the rain with an old plastic sheet. His mother, a housewife, often goes without meals so her children can eat.
Saurabh, despite all of this, never lost hope. He would sit on the floor in their crowded room, surrounded by his family, his schoolbooks often getting wet from the leaks in the roof. But he didn’t let that stop him. He studied late into the night, sometimes by the dim light of a single bulb, other times with just the flicker of a candle when the power went out. It wasn’t just about his education—Saurabh wanted a better life for his family. He wanted to pull them out of the never-ending cycle of poverty that had been their reality for generations.
But as hard as Saurabh worked, his surroundings seemed determined to pull him down. His neighbors would often tell him, “Why bother? No one from here goes to college. Just get a job and help your father.” His father’s health was deteriorating from long hours of labor and poor nutrition, and there were moments when Saurabh questioned whether he should just give up.
Then, one day, something changed. The Asha team met Saurabh—quiet, determined, and hungry for education. With their support, he started attending the Asha center regularly. For the first time, he had mentors who believed in him, who told him that his dreams were possible. Asha provided him with textbooks, guidance, and most importantly, hope.
With their help, Saurabh’s grades soared. He sat for his school leaving exams, pouring his heart and soul into every paper. When the results came in, he held the mark sheet in his trembling hands—he had passed with distinction.
Today, Saurabh has secured admission to a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Mathematics at Delhi University. As he walks the university’s hallways, surrounded by classmates from wealthier backgrounds, he carries with him the weight of his past, but also the hope of his future. He dreams of becoming a teacher, not just to educate, but to inspire. He wants to show children from his community that they too can rise above the struggles they are born into.

A Touch of Joy: Transforming Lives and Spirits with Simple Acts of Kindness
Elderly and senior citizens are the true pillars of our communities, having spent their lives nurturing their families and contributing to society. Yet, when they are left alone by their loved ones, the pain of solitude becomes all too apparent. Often, they even forget to care for themselves, neglecting simple acts like brushing or combing their hair.
During a recent visit to the Mayapuri slum community, Asha's Communication Officer, Smriti, decided to bring a bit of joy into their lives by offering them a makeover through different hairstyles. It was amazing to see how just a little time and effort transformed their looks, turning their grim faces into bright smiles. The happiness that filled the room was truly priceless.
Shanaz Begum, one of the elderly women, shared that the love and care she receives from the Asha family is unparalleled—a gesture of kindness she had not even experienced from her own children. This moment of connection and the simple act of bringing a smile to their faces reinforced for me the deep importance of celebrating and caring for our elders. They have given so much of themselves to others, and it’s our turn to show them the love and respect they deserve.

Empowered by Adversity: Iqra’s Remarkable Journey
In the heart of the bustling Chanderpuri Slum, lives a 17-year-old Iqra. Iqra's family of five depended heavily on her father's income, a rickshaw puller who earned Rs 250 a day. Life was tough, but they managed—until the day it all changed.
A month ago, Iqra's father fell seriously ill. The doctor diagnosed him with gallstones, a painful condition that demanded immediate treatment. But it wasn’t just the stones; diabetes had also gripped him, and the doctor strictly forbade any strenuous work. With his health in decline, the family's primary source of income vanished.
Iqra's mother, a housewife, tried to hold things together, but the weight of uncertainty bore heavily on all of them.
Iqra knew hardship. Born with a locomotor disability, her movement was restricted. Yet, she never let this define her spirit. She fought through life’s challenges with a quiet determination.
But when she was in the 11th grade, a new struggle emerged. Her body, already frail, became weaker, and she grew dangerously thin. The doctors recommended a year of treatment, forcing her to leave school. For a whole year, she stayed at home, her books gathering dust.
But even in those grim days, Iqra refused to give up. When she finally returned to school, she was diagnosed with Nasal bone enlargement during her final exam preparations. The pain was relentless, gnawing at her will. Surgery was inevitable, but the very thought of it filled Iqra with dread. The doctors, along with the Asha family assured her that the surgery would be quick, that the pain would soon be a memory, and that she would be back on her feet in no time. Still, Iqra hesitated, fear clinging to her like a shadow. But as the days passed and the pain intensified, she knew she had no choice.
When she was admitted to the hospital, something remarkable happened. Iqra, despite her fear and pain, brought her books along. She went over her notes, revising with a determination. Three weeks later, with her nose bandaged and her heart full of resolve, she sat for her school leaving exams.
Against all odds, she passed, earning 52% marks. With Asha support she applied for bachelors at Delhi University. The entrance exam center was located at the other end of the city, and it was no small feat to get there. But at 6 am, Iqra and Sugra, a dedicated member of Asha's team, set out from her home, determined to reach on time. The journey was long and tiring, but nothing could dampen Iqra's spirit.
On the 16th of August 2024, Iqra's life took a turn for the better. She received the news that she had been accepted into a regular Bachelor’s program, majoring in History and Political Science at Delhi University. The news spread quickly through her community, and for the first time in a long while, Iqra felt a surge of pure joy.
Iqra is confident that with the continued support from Asha, she will achieve her dreams. Her story is just one among many in the Asha communities—stories of young girls like Iqra who have the potential to change their lives but need a helping hand to do so.

Finding Family in Asha: A Journey from Loneliness to Renewed Hope
I am Mary, a 67-year-old woman living in the Kanak Durga slum colony. I came to Delhi with my husband long back, seeking a better life. Unfortunately, my husband passed away 15 years ago, leaving me alone with my small child without any resources to face the harsh reality of the ruthless world. I worked as a housemaid to support my family, but my income was too little, and there was constant financial struggle. Despite the challenges, I took the best care of my only child, gave him education , and often starved myself so that he could go to bed with stomach full. However, life took a painful turn when my only child abandoned me for greener pastures in Bangalore, leaving me all alone when I needed him the most. Facing a dire situation, without anyone to listen to the story of an elderly widow and almost fighting a lost battle for survival, the Asha team came to my life with a ray of hope amidst the dark clouds of suffering and hopelessness. Since then, I've found a new family at the Asha Centre. They give me delicious, healthy meals daily, provide me with healthcare services to treat my medical problems with love and compassion, and, most importantly, take care of my loneliness and desperation. My own child may have abandoned me, but in Asha, I have found a family who has made me look forward to life with renewed vigour and brought back the joy of living. I know that. I'm not alone anymore. I'm grateful and feel blessed for having such a wonderful Asha family.
Jaisika finds her expression through the power of Education.
My name is Jaisika, and I would like to present the story of my educational journey after battling with adverse circumstances-
"Growing up in Delhi's Anna Nagar slum presented numerous challenges, especially with my father's drinking habits and unstable income affecting our daily lives. My mother worked tirelessly at a nearby hospital, earning just 70$ a month. His habits of drinking drained our resources and sometimes led to violence, creating a hostile environment that affected my studies. During these trying times, I discovered solace and support at the Asha Center. It offered a peaceful study environment, educational resources, support and guidance from Asha Ambassadors. Asha supported me through school leaving exams and provided me with step-by-step guidance for the tough Common Universities Entrance Test (CUET)and college admission process. With their help, I excelled and secured admission to B.A Hons Psychology at Ambedkar University. Asha assisted me with my college fees and other expenses. Today, as an Asha Ambassador, I pay it forward, mentoring young students and supporting the elderly. Asha transformed my life and gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams."

Veenita's Journey of Breaking Educational Barriers with Asha
18-year-old Veenita lives in the Mayapuri slum community with her family. Veenita's parents had migrated to Delhi from UP for better opportunities. Her father, a graduate, could not get any permanent job. After struggling with odd jobs, her father started working as a part-time construction worker, earning about 84 USD a month, insufficient to meet the needs of their five-member household.
Veenita has always been interested in studies and wanted to pursue a career in law and politics. She was working hard in academics but still didn't know how to go ahead in the field. Although Veenita's father was himself educated, he refused to allow her daughter higher education opportunities because of the family's financial situation. Instead, he wanted her to start working to contribute to family income. It was a real challenge to convince someone who refused to understand logic. However, the Asha team in Mayapuri worked relentlessly to convince him, assuring financial support for Veenita's education and explaining how a good education would change their family's fortunes, breaking the shackles of poverty. Guided and motivated by senior Asha Ambassadors at every step of the complicated Common University Entrance Test and the online admission process of the University, Veenita secured admission to Delhi University in a Bachelor of Liberal Arts majoring in Political Science. Inspired by her seniors at Asha, Veenita joined the NCC and began tutoring to assist her family. Embracing the value of paying it forward, she dedicates her time after college classes to teach junior students and contribute to her community.
While narrating her story, Vineeta expressed that she learned valuable life skills in Asha and developed her future goals. She aspired to pursue an academic career as a professor of political science.

Kajal's inspiring educational journey after coping with life's challenges.
Here is a wonderful story of an Asha student Kajal who lives in a one room shanty in a slum in the Kalkaji neighborhood. Her father was diagnosed with kidney disease and this drove the family into destitution since the kids were young and he was the only bread earner in the family. They began to eat one meal a day and sometimes not even that. One of the kidneys had to be removed. Eventually, the other kidney went into failure as well. He developed cataract in both eyes. What a tragedy for a man living in poverty and trying to raise a family.
Kajal’s brother got married and abandoned his family. Although he was earning, he did not offer them any support, and discontinued his relationship with them. Sorrow upon sorrow.
Kajal had a dream to study. She saw the other Asha students going to university. How I wish I could go too, she thought. But there was no money for books, for any other resources. One day, an Asha Ambassador visited her home and invited her to visit the Asha center. She entered a whole new world and was excited! Her dreams were rekindled as she began to receive all help from the Asha team in the form of resources, IT assistance, tutoring, mentoring, emotional support and much else. Kajal would come to the center everyday, preparing for her school leaving exams as well as the dreaded CUET.
However Kajal’s parents made it clear to her that they would get her married after high school since they believed that would be the best course of action for her life. The Asha team spoke with her many times, also assuring her that they would take care of the financial expenses.
Today Kajal has found a place in a Bachelors of Arts Program in Liberal Arts at Delhi University! Can you imagine her joy and her delight? She says she doesn’t have enough words to express gratitude to the Asha family. She has gone through unimaginable struggles living in such great poverty all her life, and never allowing herself to believe that her dream would come true. Way to go Kajal! Our love, our support and our prayers are always with you. We will not let go until you realize your dreams, no matter what it takes.

Inspiring testimoney of Govardhani, ASHA CHV, KANAK DURGA SLUM
We bring you an inspiring testimony of Mrs Govardhani, an Asha CHV at Kanak Durga Slum since 1988.
“I have no words to say how Asha has played a role in transforming my life. I was illiterate, but now I can write my name and do my signature. I never went out, but now I’m a known face in my community as a health volunteer whom they feel comfortable approaching. I gained the wisdom to give education to my sons; they all became software engineers, well-settled and moved out from the slum. I had the chance to fly several times in India and abroad, which I never thought of. I have been associated with Asha since 1988 and will continue working for Asha as long as possible. Many like me, trained by Dr Kiran and the Asha team, all work on the ground. I request each of you to continue supporting Asha’s mission of transforming lives in the slums of Delhi. Your generous contributions can bring empowerment and change in many lives”.

Dr kiran visits the flood affected victims at Yamuna riverbed slum community
Dr Kiran Martin shares her experience visiting flood-affected victims at Yamuna Riverbed Community.
I returned from Boston in the early hours of Monday morning and went to the River Bed today. I was heartbroken at what I saw. The residents told me that they were not expecting the water to rise to such a high level, and they all ran to save their lives when the deluge came. All their belongings were swept away in the flood. They were sitting on folding beds given by us under temporary tents given by the government. I was told the tents would be dismantled this evening. Each of them had chosen a spot to build ramshackle huts once again.
As I walked through the area that had sticks and stones and garbage and hundreds of flies and women and children with conjunctivitis, I stopped everywhere and gave words of consolation and comfort. I promised groceries, clinics, tarpaulin sheets, utensils, clothes and all other essential items. Where else will they go for help but for Asha?

Empowered Women, Transformed Community: Laxmi's Inspiring Journey in Kalkaji Slum
Laxmi, a resident of the Kalkaji Slum Community, has been an active force within the Asha Mahila Mandal group for so many years. Through engaging in Mahila Mandal meetings, Laxmi learned valuable advocacy skills and precious Asha values, which she implemented within her family and community, and made her more confident and empowered and gave her an expression.
During one of the Mahila Mandal meetings, Laxmi raised the challenges faced by the Navjeewan camp due to the sewage manhole overflowing and the dirty water reaching the small shanties of the slum dwellers. She also raised concerns about the lack of streetlights, making women feel unsafe at night. With the support of the Asha team, Laxmi and the Mahila Mandal members took action. They wrote an application and visited the officials of the Delhi Municipal Corporation and the Ward Councillors, urging them to address the sewage issue. After three to four days of continuous efforts, the government authorities finally cleaned and repaired the manhole, ending the water leakage. Additionally, they constructed streetlights in the community lanes, enhancing safety for all residents.
Laxmi's husband, who is also an active social worker in the community, provided his unwavering support. In another instance, when local community cameras were stolen three months ago, Laxmi and her husband, under the guidance of the Asha team and government authorities, worked together to reinstall CCTV cameras in the community.
Laxmi and the other women of the Mahila Mandal have displayed remarkable determination and courage. Their empowerment has not only benefited them but the entire community as well. Their story is a shining example of how empowering women empowers the community.

Empowered by Asha: The Inspiring Journey of Kesar Amma
Meet Kesar Amma, a 70-year-old member of Asha's Geriatric care program. Originally from Dosa, Rajasthan, she and her husband moved to the Ekta Vihar slum community in Delhi over 40 years ago, hoping for a better life. However, life took a turn as her husband's alcoholism and abusive behaviour tormented her for years. Despite the hardships, Kesar Amma took on the responsibility of raising their son and two daughters, working as a daily wage labourer to make ends meet.
Living in a slum with inadequate facilities, including poor sanitation and unhygienic conditions, Kesar Amma felt the urgency to bring about change for her community. Although she was at the forefront of the struggle to build the proper housing, ironically, her house was in deliberated condition.

They continue to support her, providing regular treatment for her blood pressure under their supervision.
Beyond medical support, Kesar Amma also benefited from the "Love and Lunch" geriatric feeding program at the Asha resource centre, ensuring she is well-nourished and the centre became a place of joy, where she cherished the company of fellow members.

Meera's Journey to Overcoming Family Planning Myths and Misconceptions
Meera, a resident of the Zakhira Slum in West Delhi, has endured a challenging path in her quest to overcome family planning myths. Tragedy struck when her first child died shortly after birth due to undernourishment and her weakened condition during pregnancy. Limited access to healthcare and prevailing poverty prevented her from seeking medical assistance. Her husband and family attributed the misfortune to a divine curse—an all-too-common belief among the slum residents. The establishment of the Asha Clinic in the Zakhira Slum provided a glimmer of hope for Meera. She received vital care during her subsequent pregnancies from the clinic. As Meera's family expanded to include two girls and two boys, she realized she did not wish to conceive further and sought a permanent family planning method. However, her husband and family objected, citing religious beliefs and the fear of incurring more misfortune and potential harm to their children. Even temporary family planning methods were denied to her.
Determined to change her circumstances, when she became pregnant for the fifth time, she took the courage to seek the support of the Asha Health team. The senior health practitioner visited and engaged in counselling sessions with her husband and In-Laws to foster understanding about the importance of considering Meera's health and to permit her to opt for permanent family planning methods. Initially met with resistance, the efforts of the Asha team eventually led to a breakthrough. Meera's husband and family finally permitted her to undergo tubal ligation after the delivery.
Meera represents numerous women in Delhi's slums eager to exercise their right to family planning methods. Sadly, many face denial and opposition due to misconceptions, rigid religious beliefs, and false notions perpetuated by their families. However, there is a glimmer of hope as the average family size in the slums gradually has been decreasing from around 9-10 members to 4-5 in the last two decades, showcasing the potential for change in the future.

Asha ensures Yogita a healthy start in life.
"Investing in the health and well-being of children is not only a moral imperative but also an investment in a healthier, happier, and more prosperous future for all." - Ban Ki-moon.
Yogita is among the many children in the Asha slums who are supported to have a healthy start in life through nutritional intervention. She is her parents' fourth and last child and has two brothers and a sister. The family survives on the meagre income her parents earned through thread-cutting works on clothes. Most families here are engaged in this work to make a daily living.
Yogita was underweight when her mother brought her to the Asha Clinic at Chanderpuri for a weight check in April. She showed a BMI of 11.8 Kg/m2 with a weight of 12 Kg. The Asha health team immediately enrolled her in the intensive treatment category under the well-baby clinic. She began receiving vital micronutrients like zinc, vitamins, and calcium. Furthermore, her parents were educated on giving her homemade healthy food on time and keeping her hygiene. Two months later, Yogita's progress was evident as her weight increased to 13.5 kg with a BMI of 13.2 kg/m2. Yogita is now on her way to gaining the required weight as per her age, following the instructions of our health team.
