Kajal's inspiring educational journey after coping with life's challenges.
Here is a wonderful story of an Asha student Kajal who lives in a one room shanty in a slum in the Kalkaji neighborhood. Her father was diagnosed with kidney disease and this drove the family into destitution since the kids were young and he was the only bread earner in the family. They began to eat one meal a day and sometimes not even that. One of the kidneys had to be removed. Eventually, the other kidney went into failure as well. He developed cataract in both eyes. What a tragedy for a man living in poverty and trying to raise a family.
Kajal’s brother got married and abandoned his family. Although he was earning, he did not offer them any support, and discontinued his relationship with them. Sorrow upon sorrow.
Kajal had a dream to study. She saw the other Asha students going to university. How I wish I could go too, she thought. But there was no money for books, for any other resources. One day, an Asha Ambassador visited her home and invited her to visit the Asha center. She entered a whole new world and was excited! Her dreams were rekindled as she began to receive all help from the Asha team in the form of resources, IT assistance, tutoring, mentoring, emotional support and much else. Kajal would come to the center everyday, preparing for her school leaving exams as well as the dreaded CUET.
However Kajal’s parents made it clear to her that they would get her married after high school since they believed that would be the best course of action for her life. The Asha team spoke with her many times, also assuring her that they would take care of the financial expenses.
Today Kajal has found a place in a Bachelors of Arts Program in Liberal Arts at Delhi University! Can you imagine her joy and her delight? She says she doesn’t have enough words to express gratitude to the Asha family. She has gone through unimaginable struggles living in such great poverty all her life, and never allowing herself to believe that her dream would come true. Way to go Kajal! Our love, our support and our prayers are always with you. We will not let go until you realize your dreams, no matter what it takes.

Inspiring testimoney of Govardhani, ASHA CHV, KANAK DURGA SLUM
We bring you an inspiring testimony of Mrs Govardhani, an Asha CHV at Kanak Durga Slum since 1988.
“I have no words to say how Asha has played a role in transforming my life. I was illiterate, but now I can write my name and do my signature. I never went out, but now I’m a known face in my community as a health volunteer whom they feel comfortable approaching. I gained the wisdom to give education to my sons; they all became software engineers, well-settled and moved out from the slum. I had the chance to fly several times in India and abroad, which I never thought of. I have been associated with Asha since 1988 and will continue working for Asha as long as possible. Many like me, trained by Dr Kiran and the Asha team, all work on the ground. I request each of you to continue supporting Asha’s mission of transforming lives in the slums of Delhi. Your generous contributions can bring empowerment and change in many lives”.

Nurturing Health: Madhu, a young woman, manages Asthma under Asha’s care.
Madhu is a 22 yrs old young woman from the Zakhira Slum community who has been part of Asha’s healthcare programme since she was in her mother’s womb. All her childhood vaccinations and routine checkups were done at Asha’s clinic at Zakhira.
As she grew up, she developed symptoms of Bronchial Asthma which was diagnosed by Asha’s health team. Since then, she has continuously received medical support from Asha. During the time of Covid, she was treated under the guidance of Dr Kiran through telemedicine, where she could share her health concerns and get the right medicines. Recently she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and the health team initiated medications to avoid further complications. She is ever grateful to the Asha team for helping her manage her health conditions, enabling her to work as a beautician. Every Tuesday, she ensures that she visits the Asha clinic to check her health status. Like Madhu, the young members of the community, especially the girls, are developing health-seeking behaviour due to the positive influence of Asha’s team and the availability of health services in the slum.

Dr kiran visits the flood affected victims at Yamuna riverbed slum community
Dr Kiran Martin shares her experience visiting flood-affected victims at Yamuna Riverbed Community.
I returned from Boston in the early hours of Monday morning and went to the River Bed today. I was heartbroken at what I saw. The residents told me that they were not expecting the water to rise to such a high level, and they all ran to save their lives when the deluge came. All their belongings were swept away in the flood. They were sitting on folding beds given by us under temporary tents given by the government. I was told the tents would be dismantled this evening. Each of them had chosen a spot to build ramshackle huts once again.
As I walked through the area that had sticks and stones and garbage and hundreds of flies and women and children with conjunctivitis, I stopped everywhere and gave words of consolation and comfort. I promised groceries, clinics, tarpaulin sheets, utensils, clothes and all other essential items. Where else will they go for help but for Asha?

Empowered Women, Transformed Community: Laxmi's Inspiring Journey in Kalkaji Slum
Laxmi, a resident of the Kalkaji Slum Community, has been an active force within the Asha Mahila Mandal group for so many years. Through engaging in Mahila Mandal meetings, Laxmi learned valuable advocacy skills and precious Asha values, which she implemented within her family and community, and made her more confident and empowered and gave her an expression.
During one of the Mahila Mandal meetings, Laxmi raised the challenges faced by the Navjeewan camp due to the sewage manhole overflowing and the dirty water reaching the small shanties of the slum dwellers. She also raised concerns about the lack of streetlights, making women feel unsafe at night. With the support of the Asha team, Laxmi and the Mahila Mandal members took action. They wrote an application and visited the officials of the Delhi Municipal Corporation and the Ward Councillors, urging them to address the sewage issue. After three to four days of continuous efforts, the government authorities finally cleaned and repaired the manhole, ending the water leakage. Additionally, they constructed streetlights in the community lanes, enhancing safety for all residents.
Laxmi's husband, who is also an active social worker in the community, provided his unwavering support. In another instance, when local community cameras were stolen three months ago, Laxmi and her husband, under the guidance of the Asha team and government authorities, worked together to reinstall CCTV cameras in the community.
Laxmi and the other women of the Mahila Mandal have displayed remarkable determination and courage. Their empowerment has not only benefited them but the entire community as well. Their story is a shining example of how empowering women empowers the community.

The Unbreakable Bond: A Journey of Dreams and Friendship
Farat and Nur Saba, two friends from Zakhira Slum, forge a path of determination, supporting each other's dreams amidst challenges. Nur Saba hails from a village in Bihar. Her parents had been availing of the health services at Asha's clinic at Zakhira since its inception in 2004. The clinic became integral to Saba's life, even before she took her first breath. Every vaccination and every medical need of her were met at Asha's clinic. Farat, on the other hand, arrived in Zakhira at the age of two with her mother and elder siblings. They sought refuge here after the tragic loss of Farat's father.
As the years passed, Farat and Saba became best friends and active members of Asha Bal Mandal. Currently, both are studying in class 9th. However, Saba's parents recently contemplated sending her back to their village, which would halt her education, forcing her to care for her ailing grandmother. Determined to protect her dreams of continuing education, Saba shared her sorrows with Farat. United by love and unwavering support, Farat and Saba decided to confront Saba's parents together with the help of the Asha team. Their collective strength resonated with a shared vision — Saba's education should not be sacrificed.
Bravely, they approached Saba's parents, emphasizing education's profound impact on their lives and the dreams Saba held within her heart. They shared about Saba's unwavering dedication, her dreams of becoming a doctor or a teacher, and her love for her studies. Asha's team talked with Saba's parents to find solutions to continue her schooling. With Asha's efforts, Saba's parents have promised that they will not take her to the village.

Asha’s Lifeline: Restoring Health and Hope for Phool Biwi
Phool Biwi, a member of Mahila Mandal, moved to Delhi from Bihar with her husband and two daughters 35 years ago. She worked in a steel utensil factory, but the hazardous conditions caused her health to deteriorate, leading to asthma. With her husband as the sole earner, she couldn’t afford the nebulizer sessions at the hospital, and her condition worsened. Eventually, during a routine check-up at Asha Centre, she was diagnosed with COPD and hypertension; with the compassionate care of the Asha health team at the Zakhira Centre, Phool Biwi received nebulizers, inhalers, medications, and dietary guidance. Her health gradually improved with their support, and the Senior nurse practitioner diligently monitored her blood pressure and sugar levels during regular clinic visits.
Spreading Love and Hope: A Lunch of Compassion and Support for Asha’s Poorest Communities
On 1st July, I invited some of the poorest people in the Asha communities for a meal at my home. These people, due to circumstances beyond their control, were living in desperate financial poverty. The objective of this lunch was to convey powerful messages of love, hope, brotherhood, dignity and equality.
At first, there was disbelief when they heard they had been invited to my home for lunch. This then turned into excitement and anticipation.
The Asha team heard their painful and tragic stories, holding the values in their hearts as they did so. Some had no one to take care of them in their old age; others had serious illnesses with no support; some had tragically lost their children and had gone into severe depression; others were trying to save the lives of their dying children; the stories went on and on. There were tears, but then also smiles of hope as the Asha team promised all support possible. After a delicious lunch that everyone enjoyed together at my home, they were given grocery bags and sarees.
May we always remember them in their afflictions and their sorrows and be bearers of light and love to them all our lives.

The Asha team immediately took her to the hospital and ensured she received proper medical care. They continue to support her, providing regular treatment for her blood pressure under their supervision.
Beyond medical support, Kesar Amma also benefited from the "Love and Lunch" geriatric feeding program at the Asha resource centre, ensuring she is well-nourished and the centre became a place of joy, where she cherished the company of fellow members.

Sonu: A blossoming Sketch Artist
Residing in the Kanak Durga Camp slum community, Sonu, a young seventh-class boy, nurtures his dream to become a sketch artist with the support of Asha. Sonu belongs to a migrant family from Bihar consisting of his parents and three siblings, and the family survives on his father’s income as a painter. Sonu joined Asha Bal Mandal at the age of eight. Since then, he actively participates in meetings and academic and edutainment activities. As Sonu showed interest in sketching, the Asha team encouraged him to continue practising. As he showed improvement, he started participating in school-level competitions and winning prizes. In addition, he is actively involved in living the “Asha Way of Life”, spending time with the elderly and sick, giving away daily use items to people in need by collecting small amounts from his friends, joining the Asha team in creating health awareness in the community and visiting the offices of MLA and Municipal Counselors to find solutions for the common problems faced by the community.
Let Sonu’s story inspire us, reminding us that no dream is too big and no act of kindness too small.

Meera's Journey to Overcoming Family Planning Myths and Misconceptions
Meera, a resident of the Zakhira Slum in West Delhi, has endured a challenging path in her quest to overcome family planning myths. Tragedy struck when her first child died shortly after birth due to undernourishment and her weakened condition during pregnancy. Limited access to healthcare and prevailing poverty prevented her from seeking medical assistance. Her husband and family attributed the misfortune to a divine curse—an all-too-common belief among the slum residents. The establishment of the Asha Clinic in the Zakhira Slum provided a glimmer of hope for Meera. She received vital care during her subsequent pregnancies from the clinic. As Meera's family expanded to include two girls and two boys, she realized she did not wish to conceive further and sought a permanent family planning method. However, her husband and family objected, citing religious beliefs and the fear of incurring more misfortune and potential harm to their children. Even temporary family planning methods were denied to her.
Determined to change her circumstances, when she became pregnant for the fifth time, she took the courage to seek the support of the Asha Health team. The senior health practitioner visited and engaged in counselling sessions with her husband and In-Laws to foster understanding about the importance of considering Meera's health and to permit her to opt for permanent family planning methods. Initially met with resistance, the efforts of the Asha team eventually led to a breakthrough. Meera's husband and family finally permitted her to undergo tubal ligation after the delivery.
Meera represents numerous women in Delhi's slums eager to exercise their right to family planning methods. Sadly, many face denial and opposition due to misconceptions, rigid religious beliefs, and false notions perpetuated by their families. However, there is a glimmer of hope as the average family size in the slums gradually has been decreasing from around 9-10 members to 4-5 in the last two decades, showcasing the potential for change in the future.

Asha ensures Yogita a healthy start in life.
"Investing in the health and well-being of children is not only a moral imperative but also an investment in a healthier, happier, and more prosperous future for all." - Ban Ki-moon.
Yogita is among the many children in the Asha slums who are supported to have a healthy start in life through nutritional intervention. She is her parents' fourth and last child and has two brothers and a sister. The family survives on the meagre income her parents earned through thread-cutting works on clothes. Most families here are engaged in this work to make a daily living.
Yogita was underweight when her mother brought her to the Asha Clinic at Chanderpuri for a weight check in April. She showed a BMI of 11.8 Kg/m2 with a weight of 12 Kg. The Asha health team immediately enrolled her in the intensive treatment category under the well-baby clinic. She began receiving vital micronutrients like zinc, vitamins, and calcium. Furthermore, her parents were educated on giving her homemade healthy food on time and keeping her hygiene. Two months later, Yogita's progress was evident as her weight increased to 13.5 kg with a BMI of 13.2 kg/m2. Yogita is now on her way to gaining the required weight as per her age, following the instructions of our health team.
