Adopting a long-term, holistic approach, we engage with local community leaders and members to deliver improvements across several facets.
HEALTHCARE
We offer clinical care for common treatments and remedies, advanced healthcare through a network of doctors and visiting consultants and health education initiatives. This multi-tiered approach has left an indelible mark on the slum community: reducing child mortality, decreasing maternal deaths, improving nutrition, decreasing the birth rate and eradicating preventable diseases.
EMPOWERMENT
We equip all community members with the knowledge and skills they need to achieve change. We work closely with women’s groups to address key issues such as health problems, crime, domestic violence and children’s education. We teach children how to work in groups, organize sanitation drives, run errands for elderly slum residents and find other ways to serve their communities. We work with men on awareness of and attitude shifts towards gender equality, reproductive health and other community-related issues.
EDUCATION
From childhood education to vocational preparation, we help students of all ages to succeed. We focus on informing parents of the importance of education, helping children gain school admission and providing college students from the slums with professional guidance through the Asha Mentorship and Internship Programme. We also help participants to gain internship opportunities at renowned multinational companies and High Commissions across Delhi’s National Capital Region.
FINANCES
In partnership with the Ministry of Finance, Government of India and nine national banks, we are enabling slum dwellers to achieve the life-transforming goal of opening a personal bank account. We walk them through the bank application process step by step and then teach them how to manage money.
Environment
We believe that everyone has the right to safe drinking water and sanitation. To that end, we are showing community residents how to write applications to the government for access to clean water, electricity and other basic amenities. We are also mobilizing children’s groups and community residents to carry out sanitation drives and keep the slum lanes clean. To further improve the quality of life in these communities, we have partnered with the government to create a housing co-operative to renovate and rebuild shelters.
